 August 21 2018

For the third time, FFTC is organizing a workshop that tackles the problem of the declining number of young farmers vis-à-vis the increasing number of aging farmers in the Asian Pacific region. This  time, the focus will be on the agri-entrepreneurship aspect of farming as experts think this ought to be the main point that will foster increased engagement of the youth in agriculture.

On October 1-5, FFTC, will join forces with the Philippine Council for Agriculture Aquatic and Natural Resources Research and Development (PCAARRD) and the Malaysian Agricultural Research and Development Institute (MARDI) to organize a workshop on “Fostering Increased Engagement and Capacitating the Youth on Agri-entrepreneurship.” To be held at the MARDI headquarters in Selangor, Malaysia, the workshop will gather experts from different countries in the Asian and Pacific region to share strategies, programs and initiatives on agri-entrepreneurship that could encourage today’s young generation to venture into farming. The workshop also hopes to increase awareness and understanding on the issues and key challenges in encouraging the youth to be involved and agricultural activities and learn from the best practices and success stories of successful agri-entrepreneurs in the region.

In 2014 and 2015, FFTC organized international seminars on “Enhanced Entry of Young Generation into Farming,” and “Cultivating the Young Generation of Farmers with Farmland Policy Implication.” These seminars are a response to the Center’s strategic plan of focusing on the theme of encouraging the youth to engage in farming. However, the training aspect of developing the agri-entrepreneurial skills of the youth has not been fully tackled. One of the strong recommendations of the past seminars was to focus on the business side of agriculture and highlight the success stories of young people who made it big in agribusiness.

Successful young agri-entrepreneurs and leaders, as well as experts from various R&D institutions and the academe who have actual experiences with the youth are expected to grace and participate in the said workshop. For further information about the workshop, send an email to

Young farmers and the need to enhance their agri-entrepreneurial skills are the focus of the FFTC-PCAARRD-MARDI workshop in Malaysia.
