Philippines’ Agriculture Chief Visits Taiwan

The Philippines’ Department of Agriculture (DA) Secretary Proceso Alcala, together with a six member delegation, recently visited Taiwan to conduct meetings with officials of the Council of Agriculture (COA). Secretary Alcala and his delegation also visited agricultural trade centers to learn more of the country’s processes and technologies which can be adapted in the Philippines. This is part of their preparation for the Agri-Pinoy Trading Center Project, which the DA is hoping to be fully operational in the Philippines soon.

Assisted by the Manila Economic and Cultural Office (MECO) and FFTC, the DA delegation’s 3-day official visit to Taiwan included an official courtesy call to COA Minister Bao-Ji Chen, visit to Taiwan’s Agricultural Research Institute (TARI), meeting with the officials of the Taiwan Agricultural Chemicals and Toxic Substances Research Institute (TACTRI), AVRDC—The World Vegetable Center, and visits to the Tungkang Biotechnology Research Center, Fisheries Research Institute, Lijia Green Energy Biotechnology Co., Ltd., the Kaoshiung District Agricultural Research and Extension Station, Pingtung Agricultural Biotechnology Park and the Taiwan Agricultural Marketing Corporation, where the group was able to observe the actual operations of a wholesale auction market for fruits and vegetables.

Comprising the Philippine delegation were DA Assistant Secretary Leandro H. Gazmin, Assistant Secretary Paz Benavidez II of the Bureau of Plant Industry, Dr. Herminigilda A. Gabertan, OIC-Chief, Los Baños National Crop Research, BPI, Dr. Sammy Malvas, OIC, Fisheries Policy and Economic Division, Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Reseources (BFAR), Mr. Ms Bien Saint Garcia, Executive Assistant and Mr. Ronaldo S. Caddarao, Administrative Aide VI, Agribusiness and Marketing Assistance Service (AMAS).

The two agri chiefs talked about possible agricultural technology exchanges and agricultural collaborations between Taiwan and the Philippines in the future.

Round-table discussion between DA and COA officials. In the said meeting, DA Secretary Alcala invited Minister Chen to visit the Philippines and reiterated that Taiwanese are very much welcome to invest in the Philippines.
