Entering the premises of the Delta Electronics Research and Development (R&D) building in Taoyuan, Taiwan is like stepping into the future. Everything from its outdoor landscape, to its elevators, air-conditioning units, lighting and water systems all the way up to the roofing system and down to its parking lot spells of state-of-the-art “Green Technology.” It’s ecologically and environmentally friendly and highly engineered to save energy and contribute to the reduction of global warming.

This is the reason why the organizers of the recently concluded seminar on “Integration of Promising Technology for Aquaculture and Fisheries,” jointly organized by FFTC and the National Taiwan Ocean University (NTOU) chose this building as part of its one-day educational tour to show its delegates and participants a peek into how green technology works.

According to FFTC consultant and NTOU Professor Dr. Bonnie Pan Sun, the Delta Electronics building offers a glimpse of how fisheries and aquaculture can adapt similar technologies in their operations, particularly the use of solar panel and hydroponics technologies in food production.

Smart green life

The Delta Group, founded by Mr. Bruce C.H. Cheng in 1971, is the global leader in power and thermal management solutions. It has 54 R&D centers, 31 plant sites and 104 offices around the world. The company makes power electronics, energy management and smart green life products such as LED lighting, display and visualization and healthcare devices to name a few.

In its website, the Taoyuan R&D Center, which was visited by the FFTC-NTOU seminar participants, was described as an award-winning center, having garnered the LEED Gold-level certificate and the EEWH Gold-level certificate, respectively. “It has adopted Green Building concepts and smart management concepts including building energy-saving automation and factory management visualization. In addition, Delta’s energy-efficient solutions for air-conditioning, elevators, LED lighting and solar PV systems were also integrated into the entire building. Compared with a traditional building of the same scale, the Taoyuan R&D Center saved up to 53% in energy in 2012, and became a model for Green building Concept in Taiwan.”

In a recent article of the Taipei Times, the Delta’s Taoyuan R&D Center was mentioned as “…seeking to integrate computing systems to precisely detect and measure temperature, humidity, sunlight and wind force” in its plant factories to find solutions that can help plants grow.

Touring the whole building, the FFTC-NTOU fishery delegates got exposed to the company’s integrated photoelectric, radiating and automatic control technologies, which will be part of the main feature of Delta’s plant factories.

Fish and aqua technologies

Delta’s high technologies are truly aligned to the FFTC-NTOU joint seminar with speakers discussing topics like “Energy Saving and Carbon Reduction in Fisheries and Aquaculture,” “Development of Self-Reliant Bio-Farming System by Employing Natural Energy” and “Aquaculture Revisited—Toward Low Carbon Footprint.” The use of the light emitting diode or LED lamps, for one is now a popular method in fishing and aquaculture, especially in squid farming where underwater floodlights attract the squid and skipjack fishes to go near the lights.
