Project 9:  Enhancing collaborative research network on the control of dragon fruit diseases and pests in South east and South Asia

In 2016, FFTC, the Mekong Institute (MI) and the New Zealand Plant and Fruit Research Institute (NZPFRI) conducted a regional workshop on the “Control of Dragon Fruit Diseases” held in Khon Kaen, Thailand. One of the recommendations was to form a collaborative research and development (R&D) on the control of dragon fruit diseases and pests in the region. This special project, supported by MOFA, Taiwan aims to establish a network committed to information sharing, develop collaborative research programs and prepare joint proposals for funding.

 Major findings and recommendations:

  1. Organize a committee composed of representatives from FFTC, NPFRI, MI and TARI to further discuss the formation of the research network;
  2. Expand the scope of the network from dragon fruit pests and diseases to include the entire dragon fruit industry;
  3. Plan and prepare a Dragon Fruit Regional Network Initiation Workshop  to be held on April 22-25, 2018 at TARI, Taichung, Taiwan.

The organizing committee on dragon fruit regional research network met to discuss the plan to conduct an initial workshop in Taipei.
In the said meeting, it was resolved that the planned workshop will not solely focus on pests and
diseases for dragon fruit but will include its whole value chain.
