In the pages of this year’s annual report, we want to share with you the highlights of the year that was—all nine projects, three of which are seminars, four are workshops, and the other two are agricultural policy platform and dragon fruit networking projects. As we have reported in our Working Group and Executive Board meetings, these activities are aligned to FFTC’s Strategic Plan for 2017-2018, which basically focus on climate change, promoting food safety with green agriculture, value-added small-scale farming, strengthening small-scale farming under free trade and encouraging the young generation to go into farming.

Because we did not have a Technical Advisory Committee (TAC) meeting for this year (the meeting is held once every two years), we thought it wise to consult with prominent agricultural experts in Taiwan to discuss current trends and agricultural issues. The goal is to elicit suggestions on possible projects and activities which the Center could focus on in the next few years. We have therefore included the highlights of the said meeting in this report, together with the list of nine projects for 2018 which our Executive Board (EB) members approved last December during the 102nd FFTC EB meeting.

I would like to express my sincere gratefulness to all our partners, stakeholders, friends and all those who in one way or another supported our activities in 2017. Thank you for your valuable contributions, words of encouragement and kind gestures.

I joined FFTC on February 1, 2017. Since then, I have been working very hard to restructure the Center to make it younger and also to be able to meet a more challenging goal. The year 2017 has been a truly fulfilling year for all of us at the Center.  I would like to take this opportunity to thank the Executive Board and Working Group members for their support and supervision. Also, I want to thank our colleagues for their patience and efforts.  We soldiered on despite hurdles we encountered in manpower and resources. Just as we have ended 2017 with big hopes and positive spirits, we welcome 2018  with renewed faith, happy thoughts and big dreams not just for FFTC but also for the entire agricultural community of which we have committed to serve.
