Background / Highlights of Activity

Background and rationale

To promote the importance of fertilization management, demonstrate the Taiwan's advanced agricultural technology, and to strengthen the relationships among countries in the Asia-Pacific region, Two years ago, the Food and Fertilizer Technology Center (FFTC) collaborated with the Asia-Pacific Association of Agricultural Research Institutions (APAARI) and the Taichung District Agricultural Research and Extension Station and organized an “International Training Course on Smart Use of Fertilizers to Improve Crop Production and Soil Conservation” in Taichung, Taiwan, on 10-16 May 2015. The five-day intensive training course introduced the extension specialists from the Asian and Pacific region the concepts, theories and applications of using fertilizers the smart way. There were keynote and oral presentations, lab practices, field studies and discussions on the best way to apply fertilizers in different types of soils planted to different crops and growing in different agro-climatic conditions. After exchange of information among the participants on the program, they recommended to conduct a similar training program annually or regularly to benefit more regional extension specialists; to focus on specialized issues, crops, farm management, green fertilizers and global trend of fertilizer management and application etc.

To address the above mentioned recommendations, to foster the sharing of experiences and technologies in practical ways, and to promote the adaptation of environmentally friendly linked agricultural approaches, materials, and experiences. FFTC, the Taichung District Agricultural Research and Extension Station (TDARES), Pingtung Agricultural Biotechnology Park (PABP) plan to organize a “Workshop on Smart Use of Fertilizers for Environmentally Friendly Agriculture”. This workshop aims to tackle issues on 1) Recent developments and applications of conventional and environmentally friendly fertilizers; 2) Smart use of fertilizers for increased crop production, environmental sustainability, and soil conservation; 3) Advancement of technologies and environmental friendly agro-bio material products.

Objectives

  • To exchange knowledge and experiences on smart fertilization technologies among countries
  • To consolidate information and skills on the promotion of environmentally friendly agricultural fertilizer use and to disseminate them to the public
  • To strengthen international cooperation among regional agricultural institutions and experts
