Background / Highlights of Activity

Background

Knowledge Management (KM), the explicit and systematic management of intellectual capital and organizational knowledge, has recently become an important tool in capturing, storing, and processing data and information in agricultural organizations. KM maybe applied and focused on various levels of a system and can apply a variety of instruments and skills depending on the specific purpose.

Several organizations, such as the International Rice Research Institute (IRRI), the Centre for Agriculture and Bioscience International (CABI), and the Technical Centre for Agriculture and Rural Cooperation (CTA), have spearheaded the development of large databases on various crops such as rice, wheat, and maize. Significant initiated projects, such as online plant clinics help farmers adapt new technologies and enable them to make better, informed decisions in farm management. The Asia Pacific Association of Agricultural Research Institutions (APAARI), likewise is considered as among the pioneer organizations promoting information communication technologies and management in agricultural research for development to support agricultural knowledge management and dissemination in the Asian pacific region. APAARI has organized and supported various workshops and trainings on KM and pursues the advocacy, capacity building and integration of information resources.

FFTC and DOST-PCAARRD organized the International Training Workshop on Developing Knowledge Management in Agriculture for Small-scale Farmers on May 9-11, 2017 at PCAARRD, Los Baños, Laguna to serve as venue for sharing learnings on various KM strategies/programs being implemented by agricultural organizations in the Asian Pacific region. The main objective is to draw insights and enhance the functional guide for KM in agricultural development for possible adoption/adaptation of the invited participants in their respective organizations/countries.
